3 strategies to help your job search Want a new job or a career this year?   Follow my three simple tips to help you make a career change faster… As a lead recruiter and Interview Coach,  I’m seeing that many professionals make the mistake of posting their resume/CV online, or sending their resume to recruiters â€" and then sitting back and waiting for something to happen.   In today’s tough job market, you need to be smarter, more strategic and  much more assertive. My clients are having remarkable success  by applying  these three simple strategies… 1. Create a Strategic Job Search Plan. It’s easier to get hired when you know which companies are hiring. Find out where your potential employers are by reading job boards as well as industry news, business journals and company websites. *On-line job boards â€" some job search sites are notorious for listing outdated jobs, or low paying jobs.   Why waste your time?   Instead, research job boards by job title and location to find those with the most updated job listings.   Bookmark those sites a review them weekly. *Company websites â€" create a list of targeted companies where you WANT to work, and then check their job sites weekly. Also, talk to your network  and search LinkedIn to find people who are currently working, or worked in the past, at each of your targeted companies. 2. Build Relationships. The #1 way professionals are getting hired in today’s job market is by getting a referral within the hiring organization.   That means, you need to make it a priority to get connected, and stay connected to those who could hire you, or introduce you to others who could potentially hire you. Get re-connected with past employers, colleagues and customers.   Meet new contacts by attending conferences, trade shows, business networking events and association meetings that target the industry or job role that you want. Also, you never want to give the impression that you’re hungry for a job.   Send out personal emails with information that you think would interest them such as links to videos, press releases, case studies or websites.   Invite them to networking events.   Introduce them to others in your network.   The goal is to create a relationship with your network so that they are drawn towards you (and not running away from you!:-) 3. Think Up, Down and Sideways. One of the biggest mistakes job hunting professionals make is looking for a position with the exact same job title as the one they had in their last job.   Instead, consider looking at smaller companies and going one level up, as well as larger companies and going one level down. Additionally, some companies don’t require you to have industry experience, only expertise in a specific job function.   This means that you can double your opportunities by applying for jobs in a variety of industries. More On Organizing for Your Job Search - Your Desk is Prime Real Estate! - Did you know that you own prime real estate? If youre in a job hunt, it could be more valuable than beach front property in, say Maui! Didnt know you were such a high roller? Your desk is your prime real estate. Being organized and productive are key goals for anyone involved in a job hunt. How it is organized may mean the difference between getting a job and not even remembering to follow up with an employer! I know from personal experience how important an organized work space can be. Even the little things make a big difference in your day. I always seem to be looking for the same desk reference. Every time I look for it, it is somewhere else. Inevitably, I get annoyed that 1) I cant find it and 2) Im wasting my valuable time looking for it. Especially when it is a really busy day, Ill start getting stressed and annoyed with myself that I cant keep my reference handy! I finally decided to ALWAYS keep it in the same spot close by, but not in my way. Its not rocket science, but Ive already saved myself time (and sanity) by being able to just reach for it at a moments notice no stress! Yesterdays post reminded us that a clean desk is NOT the sign of a deranged mind! If you are in the midst of a search or want to appear productive and valuable at your current place of employment, youll want to get your desk together. Here are some tips from Atlanta based professional organizer, Lauren Davidson, owner of Around Tuit Organizing Productivity: Sure-fire Ways to Organize Your Office for Job Hunting: Be a real estate magnate: Surfaces and storage within arms reach are prime real estate! Frequently used items live there: very active files, phone/PDA, a note pad, favorite pen. Floaters get lost, while items with a home are predictably found (think: always know where my___ is). Make the home convenient, and you have a winner. Keep your thoughts in one place: A job seekers best friend is a notebook that stays on the desk, to jot down anything from brainstorming to your daily to-do list. Not a pad, definitely not sticky notes. Just a plain, spiral notebook you choose the color. Keep priorities in plain sight: In a standing file on the desktop, each job for which you are interviewing has a separate, labeled file. Applications awaiting a response are together in their own file. No-gos in another file (those can go in a drawer if the visual bothers you). Take paper by the horns: Paper clutter is distracting and can be a source of anxiety. As a professional organizer, much of the paper clutter I see is caused by over-printing. Print out items you need to take with you, or that will no longer be readily available. Print out essential information you would not otherwise remember. Less printing leaves more room on your desk, in your file drawer and, dare I say, in your head. Lauren says, Getting rid of clutter makes room for life! I agree! It will give you some sense of how they handle pressure.Make candidates prepareAnyone can use buz z words when answering questions. However, what happens if you ask them to do a power point presentation instead of a traditional interview? Will they be as dynamic as their resume says they are? Will they be able to demonstrate that they have the core competencies that you are looking for?
